• USDA grants and loan guarantees for renewable energy (or energy efficiency) projects for farmers:

     The USDA Rural Development administers the Renewable Energy for America Program (REAP),
     which provides grants and loan guarantees for renewable energy (or energy efficiency)
     projects for farmers and small businesses (no residential). The 2010 announcement was
     published in the Federal Register.

     Selection for funding for REAP projects is based on a nation-wide competition.
     To qualify for consideration for funding, you must meet the application requirements,
     technical requirements and environmental requirements.

     Complete applications must be received by the appropriate USDA Rural Development
     State Office no later than 4:30 local time June 30, 2010.

• Technical and Financial Assistance Available to Help Improve Water Quality:

     Agricultural producers and land owners who have an interest in an agricultural operation
     predominantly located within one of three designated sub-watersheds of the Raritan River
     basin can apply for technical and financial assistance to implement farm practices that
     improve water quality. A total of $216,087 in federal funds is available through the Agricultural
     Water Enhancement Program (AWEP) for 2010. Some of the practices which will be funded
     include livestock access control fencing, composting, cover crops, nutrient management,
     prescribed grazing, pest management, gutters, stream crossings, waste storage facilities,
     and livestock watering facilities.

     North Jersey Resource Conservation and Development can help you determine
     if you are eligible to apply for AWEP. Call 908-735-0733 x 102. Applications
     for the program can be made at the Natural Resources Conservation Service
     in Franklin Township, Hunterdon County (908-782-4614, ext. 3) or
     Hackettstown, Warren County (908-852-2576, ext. 3). Applications must be
     received by May 14, 2010.
